Family Game Night Fun

MONOPOLY Plus on the PlayStation3 is a fantastic option for family game night! #HasbroGameChannel #CG

We go a little crazy for games in our house. Dave and I both grew up playing board games with our families, and it was such a special thing for us that we want to pass that along to our own family. I think it’s so important to spend quality time as a family, talking and eating and having fun. Game night is a perfect way to do that.

We try to do family game night at least every other week, if not more often, and it makes me happy that our kids love it so much that they ask for it. With David about to turn 10 this year, I know it won’t be long before he’ll be more interested in spending time with his friends than with us, so I’m cherishing every moment we can get now.

The main issue we run into when doing family game night is finding games that all 3 kids can play and that don’t drive Dave and I crazy. Mason is almost 4, so he’s pretty young to play most games by himself, which means that he usually plays with someone else, “on their team”.

Except, again, he’s almost 4, which means that he wants to do everything by himself. So game nights often include some minor battles while we try to explain that he can’t always play on his own.

So we were super excited when we heard about MONOPOLY Plus for PlayStation3 on the Hasbro Game Channel and couldn’t wait to try it out.

I figured they’d like the game, but I never could have anticipated how much they enjoy it — or how much Dave and I would love playing it too. {For reals, they love it. They may look like they’re being forced to do homework in that photo, but that is called laser focus.} Since we downloaded the game last weekend, we have literally played it every day. And the best part is, because it’s all automated on the PS3, Mason can play almost entirely by himself. No worrying about counting out money, keeping track of all those property cards, or moving his game piece the right number of spaces without knocking everyone else’s out of the way.

On top of that, the game boards are crazy fab. They have the option of the classic 2D board, but we never use that. Instead, we use the animated 3D version, which includes a full city in the center and surrounding the board, complete with amusement park, museum with a brought-to-life T-Rex skeleton, a train depot with running trains and a beach.

While going to jail usually stinks in Monopoly, in this version, there are sirens blaring and police lights flashing.

And when you are thrown in jail, a steel cage drops down, trapping your game piece inside. Somehow it makes going to jail a bit more fun. {In the game. Only in the game. In real life, sirens, flashing police lights and steel cages are bad. Stay in school, kids.}

If you don’t already do a family game night, you should seriously consider instituting one. You won’t believe how much your kids love it, and you’ll be thrilled with the quality time with the fam!

    I love playing Monopoly. I’m really bad at it and I always lose. I make horrible decisions. Happy Friday!
