Tutorial: Ombre Flower Shadow Box

I have a cheap and easy project for you today. Those are two of my favorite words: cheap and easy. {When you’re talking about home decor or DIY projects. When you’re talking about people, that’s an entirely different story.}

Anyways.

I love ombre. I know I’m a little late jumping on the ombre bandwagon, but I really do love it. And when I saw this pack of ombre paper flowers at Michaels, I knew I wanted to do something with it.

So here’s what you need.

Paper ombre flowers {I got mine for $3.99 at Michael’s.}
Shadow box {Mine is a Ribba frame from Ikea, but this one is very similar.}
Pretty paper that coordinates with your flowers
Card stock
Scissors and/or craft knife
Glue

Disassemble your shadow box. Mine came with a mat, so I traced that onto my paper and cut it out. If you don’t have a mat, cut your paper to fit your frame, decide how large you want your center to be and then cut it out. Use a straight edge and craft knife to cut out the center. If your paper has a repeating or specific pattern, make sure you center it on the mat before cutting it out.

Cut a piece of card stock to fit the center of your mat and tape to the backside of your patterned paper.

Now it’s time to lay out your flowers on your card stock. A normal person would make a whole bunch of measurements and make sure that all of the flowers are evenly spaced and perfectly arranged. I, however, am not a normal person and decided to wing it.

{Not entirely sure why my paper looks all wonky in these pictures. It looks like my 5-year-old cut it out — no offense, Con Man. But I swear, it was straight and even.}

I started by arranging all of my flowers evenly and found that it’s easier to do this if you do at least two of the corner ones first. For me, it was easiest to lay them out first, then go back and glue them down one by one. I used hot glue, but you could use whatever type of glue you want.

Once you have them glued down, pop everything back in your frame, and you’re done!

I have made two of these now. The other one used nine larger flowers and a damask scrapbook paper. It lived on my mantel for a while. {If you want to know how to make that wreath, check out this post.} This turquoise one will go in my guest room, when and if I ever get around to decorating it.
