One of my favorite things to do, DIY-wise {try saying that 5 times fast!} is using something in a completely different way than what they were intended for. I’ve done it a bunch of times, like with this sweater, these safety pins and these t-shirts.
Now I’m doing something crazy with bobby pins: making a bobby pin necklace.
{Note: I originally shared this tutorial on my friend Julie’s blog last year, but now I wanted to share it with all of you lovely people too!}
If you read my blog regularly, you know that I’m a bit obsessed with Anthropologie-inspired knock-offs — like this one and this one. This necklace is sort of another one.
I had seen other DIY bobby pin necklaces on Pinterest before, and thought it would be cool to make one, but when I saw this Root-Needles Necklace from Anthropologie {now unavailable}, it totally make me think of bobby pins and I knew I was going to have to make one for myself.
Because that one, while gorgeous, was $88. Which for Anthropologie, was actually not that bad {I mean, this one is over $2,000!!}. But mine cost about $8, which is way better, and it literally took me about 5 minutes to make, if that. And, if you use an old chain that you already have and the bobby pins you have in your bathroom drawer, you could actually make it for free!
I found this chain in the crafts section at Walmart for around $4. I loved it because when you first look at it, it looks like it’s just plain black, but the edges of each link are gold, so it’s kind of glittery when you move. I cut it down so that it was about 17 inches long and added the included clasp and jump rings to the ends of the chain.
Then, I just started sliding on bobby pins! I used a total of 40 regular-sized black bobby pins and 12 mini gold ones. I did a pattern of:
12 black – 4 gold – 8 black – 4 gold – 8 black – 4 gold – 12 black
I really love how it looks, and it’s fun because you can wear it with the flat part of the bobby pin out for a cleaner look, or you can flip it around and show the wavy part for a little funkier style.
Plus, if you decide you want them to look different, then whip out some spray paint or nail polish, and make them whatever color you want!
I have worn this necklace a number of times, and not one person has ever guessed that it’s made of bobby pins!
