Hey, everyone! It’s been a loooong time. Hope you’ve been hanging in with me while I worked out what the heck I’m doing. We’ve also been spending a fair amount of time in the emergency room and at urgent care.
Yeah. Love my boys, but holy moly do they get hurt and/or sick a lot. Connor hit his head at the playground a couple of weeks ago and ended up with a concussion. Earlier this year, David got a baseball pitch to the face.
Yep, those are the stitches from the baseball on his chin. Awesome.
Being a mom of boys (or of any kids, for that matter — I know a lot of girl moms who spend their fair share of time in the ER or dealing with skinned knees!), I need to be prepared for anything. But I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to clean up bloody elbows at the park or a baseball game and been stuck without a bandaid or been in a cloud of mosquitos but had no bug spray.
Which is why I’ve created a car emergency kit. And honestly, I don’t know how I lived without one for so long.
I sat down and thought of everything we could possibly need in the car, at any of our sports activities, or anywhere else away from home. {And I came up with a handy-dandy checklist that you can download, print and use to create your own kit!}
I included several different kinds of bandages {like these, these and these}, instant ice packs, eye drops, cortisone cream, Benadryl, Emetrol {if you have never tried this stuff, you need to check it out! It’s a nausea wonder drug.}, hand sanitizer and hand sanitizing wipes, a small bottle of water, children’s and adult’s acetaminophen, children’s and adult’s ibuprofen, antacids, antibiotic ointment, insect repellent and WaterWipes.
If you have never heard of WaterWipes, they are absolutely amazing baby wipes — I still have packs of them stashed all over my house, and my youngest kid is 4 and has been out of diapers for almost two years. I love them because they’re a pure, chemical free wipe that contains only two ingredients: 99.9% purified water and 0.1% grapefruit seed extract. They are durable, unlike some of the baby wipes out there that you can stick your finger straight through. I also like that the wipes are not interfolded, which preserves the sterile environment in the package. My kids had so many issues with diaper rash when they were little, I totally wish I had discovered these years ago! {I found my WaterWipes at GIANT, but you can click here to find WaterWipes in a store near you!}
Anyway, back to the emergency kit. I put everything in a pretty box with a lid, and I keep it in my car. Honestly, we have used this thing at least once a week since I created it. Except for the WaterWipes, which we use pretty much every day (it’s unbelievable to me the mess that 3 boys and a dog can make of themselves in a short amount of time).
{**PLEASE NOTE: Some medications can lose their potency when stored at extreme temperatures. If you live in an area of the country that gets either really cold or really hot, be sure to check the medications’ packaging to ensure it’s being stored properly.}
What would you keep in your car emergency kit? Did I forget anything??

Always a smart idea to be prepared in your car, especially if you have little travelers with you. Make sure you have a back up phone charger too.

That’s a great idea!!

Great idea! Thanks for sharing. Where did you get your pretty storage box?
Jenn says
Thanks, Mindy! I am pretty sure I got it at HomeGoods. Either there or Michael’s. Both are great places to find fun storage boxes! 🙂

What a great idea! I think I would add something for insect bites/stings. This past summer when we were on vacation, my 5-year-old got stung by a bee after we finished swimming. How I wished we’d had something for a sting right there in the car!

That’s a great idea! I can’t believe I didn’t have anything in there already!

I would add a few tampons and pads for anyone who has an unexpected monthly visit. They can also be used in first aid incidents where bandaids or a cotton ball isn’t enough.
