I absolutely love apples. They are one of my very favorite fruits, and I love pretty much everything apple flavored. And the great part is, so do the boys. They love having apples for snacks, and they ask for applesauce almost every day in their lunches.
While applesauce isn’t that hard to make, traditional applesauce recipes usually call for a pretty long cook time, which means you need to be paying attention and stirring the pot a lot to make sure it doesn’t burn. I am an impatient person who tends to do at least 5 different things at the same time, so recipes like that aren’t generally great for me.
You know what is great? A slow cooker applesauce recipe. You dump everything in there, turn it on, and in a couple of hours, you have an absolutely amazing, sweet, delicious chunky applesauce. My kids go crazy over it just plain, and it’s ridonkulous over vanilla ice cream too.
All you have to do to get started is peel and chop your apples. I usually use whatever I have on hand, so for this batch, I used a combination of Gala and Honeycrisp apples. Toss them all in your slow cooker, add some water, a little bit of sugar and some pumpkin pie spice. Slap the cover on, and let it go! In a few hours, you’ll have the most amazing applesauce ever.
And if chunky applesauce isn’t your thing, you can always let it cook down even more, or use a hand blender or a food processor to smooth it out.
