I don’t drink coffee. I’ve tried, many times, to like coffee, but no dice. I like the Starbucks fancy-pants coffees, but considering that they’re loaded with sugar and heavy cream and caramel and chocolate, I try to stay away from them. {I mean, if I’m going to consume 4,000 calories in one sitting, I’m going to make it count. Know what I mean?}
That being said, I love coffee mugs. I don’t know what it is about drinking out of a mug, but there’s something comforting about it. So when I saw this Anthropologie-Style Confetti Vase on Hi Sugarplum! {you all know I have a thing for Anthropologie knock-offs!} I knew I wanted to do something similar, just on a mug.
I used DecoArt Americana Gloss Enamel Paint Pots, which I got at Michael’s, and a plain white mug from Walmart that was about $2. For the polka dots, I just used Q-tips.
I used all the colors in the collection except white and black. Because I wanted most of my dots to be on the bottom, I flipped the mug upside down. Just start with one color and do random dots all around the mug. Then, turn your Q-tip around and move on to your next color.
If you make a little mistake, or the paint drips a little when you’re lifting up the Q-tip, no biggy. Just wipe up the mess with a clean, damp Q-tip.
Once I had gone through all my colors, I let the mug dry for about an hour. Then I went back over it with each color, overlapping them until I was happy with the way it looked. I let each color dry for a few minutes in between so that the colors wouldn’t mix, but I’m not sure if that was really necessary.
That’s it! To permanently set the paint, you need to let the paint dry for 48 hours, then place it in a cold oven, set it to 325 degrees, and let bake for 30 minutes.
I love my polka dot mug! It just is so colorful and bright and fun, I get happy when I look at it.
These would make such great gifts — you could do team colors, rainbows, holiday colors … the possibilities are endless!

Is the paint design dishwasher/microwave safe?
Angela says
I’m curious as to if the paint once it was dry if it would be dishwasher safe, or would you have to use the dishwasher safe Modge podge to protect it..
Please let me know. I have quite a few people that I can make these for gifts.. I just make some for myself as well!! They are absolutely adorable!!

How has the mug held up? I’m doing a Mother’s Day craft with my students soon and looking to do something similar and wondering if the paint will last through dishwasher washing…
Jenn says
It has held up great, although I don’t put it in the dishwasher. There are specific top-shelf dishwasher-safe enamel paints that you could use though, like these ones: http://ow.ly/4mMi4X. Good luck, I think this would be a great Mother’s Day craft!!
