So David is turning 10 in a couple of weeks, and I’m about to lose my mind. I cannot believe my biggest little man is going to be in the double digits. He was seriously just. born.
I still vividly remember the chub rolls and the footie pajamas and the way he said “fingaboom” instead of “flamingo.”
*Sigh*
But, whatever. I need to get ahold of myself.
He’s getting older, and as a result, we’re trying to treat him like he’s getting older. He’s currently sharing a room with Connor, while Mason has his own room. As part of his 10th birthday extravaganza {Dave and I are also taking him to New York for the weekend — just the three of us!}, we decided to do a big ol’ bedroom switcheroo. David will be moving into what is now our guest room, Mason will be moving in with Connor, and what is now Mason’s room will become my sewing and craft room/office/our guest room.
Whew, that’s a lot of switching.
But back to D’s new room. It’s super plain right now, but I’ve decided to decorate his room in a vintage sports theme. We are still very much in the early stages of this process, so I’m not 100% sure yet what all I am going to do, but I found a really cool old catcher’s mitt at a flea market last weekend {the guy who sold it to me said it was from the 1930’s or 40’s, but I think it’s actually the 50’s or 60’s}. I want to get a few more antique sports items to hang on his wall.
He also wants a basketball hoop in his room, and he is constantly playing games and tournaments and leaving papers all over the house. So I decided I was going to make him a wall chalkboard so he can write whatever the heck he wants up there.
This was such an easy project, I can’t even get over it. I started by using a 48″ level to mark off the outlines of where I wanted my chalkboard on the wall.
Then I busted out my FrogTape® brand painter’s tape. I know there are a ton of different painter’s tapes out there, but I only ever use FrogTape. It has some fancy-pants PaintBlock Technology that creates some sort of a gel at the edge of the tape when the paint hits it so that the paint can’t bleed under there. All I know is that I have tried many kinds of painter’s tape, and this one is by far the one that works the best for me, and it’s the only one that I can count on to always give me a nice, clean line.
Anyway. I stuck the FrogTape on the wall and used the flat edge of the lid to make sure it was stuck down as tightly as I could.
Then, I just started painting! I used a foam roller and two coats of the chalkboard paint, and it came out so well.
I was a little skeptical after just one coat, because it looked pretty streaky. But once I had the 2nd coat on, it looked fabulous. I’m still waiting for it to fully cure {that’s what I get for not reading the can — it says you have to wait 3 days before you write on it! It’s killing me. Patience is not my strong suit.}, but I decided to write “Welcome to David’s Room” at the top because it will be permanent.
I started by printing out the words on my computer and then used my handy-dandy transfer technique {that I used here and here} to transfer the words to the chalkboard. I used the Delicate Surface FrogTape to tape up the words because you can use it on freshly painted surfaces. I certainly didn’t want to rip off all my hard painting work!
Once the outline was on the chalkboard, I just went over them with a chalk marker, and it was all done!
I also attached a little galvanized tub {from the dollar bins at Target} to the bottom of the chalkboard to hold chalk.
I am getting excited to see how this room turns out! I will be sure to keep you updated on the progress.
