A couple of weeks ago, I shared my Tiny Prints-inspired pink and gold graduation party and told you that I’d be sharing some of the DIY projects and recipes I did for that. {Like my secret to making no-bake cake pops!} Well, today’s your lucky day, people. I’m going to share one of the fabulous — and insanely easy — DIY projects I’ve been working on.
A gold glitter cake stand.
Now, let me tell you something about my house. If you read this blog regularly, you know I have 3 boys. Which means I don’t get to bust out my girly side all that often. My life is way more sports and dirt than princesses and glitter.
But today, my friends, I’m embracing the glitter. And gold. And all things sparkly.
And, because I’m me, I am able to describe this project with my two favorite DIY-related words: easy and cheap.
This cake stand started its life as a lowly clear glass Dollar Tree plate and candlestick. Can you believe it?
All you have to do is hit those bad boys with some gold spray paint. I used Rust-Oleum Bright Coat Metallic in Gold. But THIS IS IMPORTANT: If you want to put food directly on this {i.e., instead of on parchment, tissue, a doily or something similar}, you must paint the bottom, not the top of the plate. You will still see all that gorgeous gold loveliness, but you will not poison yourself with spray paint. That’s what I can a win-win, people.
So paint both the bottom of the plate and the entire candlestick. I did two light coats and that was plenty.
Once the paint is dry, it’s glitter time. I used Martha Stewart Crafts Fine Glitter in Yellow Barite. To glitter it up, grab some white crafts glue or Mod Podge and paint your candlestick, being sure to cover everything. Pour your glitter all over the glue, then shake off the excess. {Work on a large piece of paper so it’s easy to get the excess glitter back in the jar.} Let that dry for about 20-30 minutes, then tap it on the table a few times to double check that it’s all covered. Fill in any blank spots as necessary, and then spray with an acrylic sealer. I used Krylon Crystal Clear.
After everything is dry, it’s time to assemble. I first tried hot glue, but it popped apart the first time I used it. So I dug around and found some clear silicone sealant. Place your plate upside-down. Run a line of the sealant along the top of the candlestick and center it on the plate. Press down firmly, making sure it’s completely sealed onto the plate.
Now comes the worst part of this whole process: waiting. You need to let it dry for 24 hours, but once you do, that sucker isn’t budging.
That’s all there is to it!
This is one of my favorite projects, because the possibilities are endless. Thrift stores are chock-full of candlesticks and plates, so you can find a huge assortment and make a whole bunch of different, gorgeous cake stands.
And they don’t have to be just for cakes or cookies, either. Make a small one to use by your bed for jewelry, or in the bathroom for soap!
