While I do love my children more than anything in the world, I am not one of those moms who relishes the idea of spending 24 hours a day with them during the summer. In fact, as tomorrow’s last day of school rapidly approaches, I have been having minor periodic panic attacks when I think about how in the world I’m going to occupy them over the next few months.
Then I discovered Kiwi Crate.
Kiwi Crate delivers hands-on, educational projects designed for kids ages 3-8. Each box contains everything you need for at least two fun projects.
I’ve talked before about my love of monthly subscription boxes. I mean, they’re like a tiny little Christmas every few weeks! I get so excited when I see one arrive, and I cannot wait to tear into it to see what I got. Now the boys get to get in on the monthly gifts fun!
What I love about Kiwi Crate is that, unlike a lot of other monthly subscription boxes for kids, they send crafts and activities, rather than just toys. Not only do kids get to create something special of their own, but they get to use their imagination and learn while they’re playing.
The theme of our first Kiwi Crate was Farm Fun. {It was all I could do to keep Mason from tearing into everything before I took pictures. He clearly takes after me in matters such as these.}
Honestly, this could not have come at a better time, as he had just gotten his tonsils out and we were looking for some quiet activities to do together.
The projects included a set of barnyard friend finger puppets and a farm plot, which allowed the kids to grow their own crops.
My little buddy was so excited when I finally let him at all of the fun.
This picture was taken right after he yelled “YES!! Googly eyes! I love googly eyes!!!” I mean, who doesn’t??
The finger puppets might be the cutest little things I’ve ever seen. And I’m pretty sure this has a lot to do with those googly eyes. Because googly eyes make anything better. You can slap some googly eyes on a blank sheet of paper and suddenly you have a funny little ghost guy. Love ’em.
What cracked me up was how Mason insisted upon making his look exactly like the ones in the instructions. With every single piece, he had to consult the example photo. And then he was very careful when he was actually putting the pieces on.
You know what my very favorite thing about these projects was? NO GLUE. No glue anywhere in the entire thing. Moms, you know what I’m saying here. The messiness potential of glue is eclipsed only by that of glitter. {Glue + glitter = hell on Earth for me.} Plus, Mason can get really frustrated by glue, because it can be hard to control, which means it can get everywhere and make the final project a bit of a disaster.
But everything in the Kiwi Crate is designed so no glue is necessary. The finger puppet bodies were already glued together, all of the googly eyes and felt pieces were sticky-back, and they included double-sided sticky foam for the farm plot fence.
Bless you, Kiwi Crate designers.
Mason was utterly fascinated by the “Wonder Soil” tablets that were included in the farm plot. {I’ll be honest, so am I. I love those things.} He was very confused when I told him that those rock-hard little tablets were the soil. {“But Mom, how we going to get the seeds INTO them??”} Then he kept saying “WHOA! They getting bigger!!” as the water soaked into them and they puffed up into soil.
We had to do the farm plot right next to the finger puppets: “in case the animals get hungry, they can eat the dirt!”
Seriously, the cuteness. Mason was SO proud of these — he kept showing everything to everyone, saying: “I made these all by myself!!”

My boys love love loved their farm Kiwi Crate! I can’t wait to sign them up for a regular shipment. We’re making the farm plots next week. I can’t wait to see their reaction to the soil after seeing Mason’s.
