Scavenger Hunt Lunch for Kids

My kids have a knack for turning anything into a competition or a game, so they love a good scavenger hunt. 

Which is why one of the items on our summer fun list was a scavenger hunt lunch. 

The first one we did was in the winter, when I had one kid home sick from school for a few days and then, just as he started feeling better, we got a ton of snow and school was canceled. Instead of hiding in the corner with a bottle of liquor as I briefly considered at first, I decided to get creative and come up with a fun way to pass some time. And thus the scavenger hunt lunch was born.

It’s super easy to do — all it takes is a tiny bit of planning and a little sneakiness on your part {if you’re doing the setup while they’re around}.

I sent them upstairs to clean up their room and told them that when they came downstairs their lunch would be ready. They were all sorts of confused when they came down and only found two juice boxes and a note on the table.

It took them a minute to figure out what was going on, but once they did, they were way excited. Let’s just say happy dances were involved.

Clue #1: Your first course is in a place where dirty kids get clean.

Yup, you guessed it: the bathtub! 

{Note: when doing your own scavenger hunt lunch, it’s a good idea to serve food that is easily eaten, and/or in individual packages. Course #1 was fruit snacks.}

Clue #2: Your second course is in a silly place under a not-so-silly place to eat.

Mason thought eating granola bars under the kitchen table was slap-your-knees hilarious.

Clue #3: Your third course is underneath a place where you can score points with a ball.

Doritos under the pop-a-shot basketball hoop!

Clue #4: Your dessert is in something that takes us from one place to another.

This one may or may not have led to some minor pushing and shoving as they each wanted to be the first one up the steps {see previous comment about the competitiveness of these two}.

The final course: saltwater taffy in the car!! {Please excuse Mason’s pantsless appearance. That’s just how we roll sometimes in our house.}

I just love turning something as ho-hum as lunch into such a fun and silly experience. The possibilities on this are endless, but the most important thing is that they have fun!
