Galvanized Fountain Planter

Flowers make me happy.

I pretty much always have fresh flowers in a vase around my house, I would say probably half of my clothes have flowers on them, and I love having flowers around the outside of my house as well. 

Flowers can so easily brighten up any space, and it’s hard to be in a space that’s with flowers and be grumpy. If I could, I would love 

The other thing I love is using things for something other than what they were originally intended for. 

Like this fountain from Wayfair. Of course, I had to pick one that is no longer available on the site, but you can click here to see their full selection of outdoor fountains. There are a ton of them, so you can definitely find one that suits you. This one would work great, as would this one.

Anyway, I saw it, and immediately thought it would make an amazing planter for Wayfair’s Plant Outside the Box campaign, where they challenged a group of bloggers to create an unconventional planter from any item in their inventory.

And I am so, so happy with the way it turned out. 

I decided to use petunias because they are gorgeous, they multiply like crazy, and they’re relatively easy to keep (read: somewhat hard for me to kill, which is saying something because I have the blackest thumb ever). 

I decided to use three colors of petunias, and placed them in the fountain buckets in a sort of ombre pattern, graduating from lightest to darkest from top to bottom. 

I also used vinca vines, which are a cascading plant, to mimic the look of water flowing from bucket to bucket in the planter. Looking back, the only thing that I might have changed would be the vinca vines. I think the flowers might have been enough, but I’ve only had this done for a few days, so I’ll see if I change my mind. 

It was super easy to do, and took practically no time at all. Because there are no drainage holes in the buckets, I used a layer of gravel in the bottom and then just added in the plants. 

Getting the flowers in the bottom tub was a little tricky, but I just scooched them around a little bit until it was pretty much filled in. 

Overall, I just love it. My only issue is that I am having trouble deciding where its permanent home is going to be. I’ve had in on my front step and on the deck, but I can’t decide where I like it better.

And this morning, I was eyeing up my patio as a possible location too.

Wherever it ends up, I love it on this little blue table I got from Wayfair a couple of years ago {also unavailable now, but this one and this one would both work}, so it’s definitely going to stay there.

Maybe I’ll just have to order a few more fountains and make them all into planters!
