Last week, as I was getting ready for our annual luau party, I realized that I still had my Fourth of July mantel up.
Yeah. It’s now the end of July. I am totally on the ball.
So I decided to change it up and create a summer mantel with a laid-back, beachy vibe.
I bought a few things, but I used a lot of things I had around the house too.
I made the flip flop garland last year for the luau. I just clipped dollar store flip flops to a length of sisal twine with clothespins.
I found the summer quote on Pinterest and made the printable in PicMonkey. Then I just printed it out on a piece of card stock and clipped it to an old clipboard I had around the house. {Check Goodwill or your local thrift store for old clipboards; I see them there constantly.} I borrowed the vintage Mason jar full of shells from Mason’s room {I found a bunch of them at a garage sale last summer, and I had to get them because I loved that they said “Perfect Mason.” I have several of them on Mason’s shelf, filled with shells, marbles and small toys.}
I got the large starfish, silk orchid planter and small jar with the blue lid on clearance at HomeGoods. To prop up the jar, I used a couple of wooden blocks behind the reclaimed wood frame that I found at a craft show on Memorial Day. I will be doing a tutorial soon on the hemp twine lidded Mason jar, and I found the large conch shell for $2 at Goodwill.
I just love how it turned out, and I got a ton of compliments on it at the party.
Question: Do you change up your mantel throughout the year, or just for the holidays?

I love how Americans update their mantels when there are different events and seasons, I think we are pretty boring in New Zealand with our mantels, opting usually just to decorate at Christmas time. I think I might take on this idea and give my mantel a new look this Spring.(its mid winter here in NZ at the moment).

Makes me wish I had a mantel to decorate! I do have a television console, and we’ve got our TV mounted on the wall, so I’ve got a little space to play with. I love that Mason jar with shells. I’ve got a a few old bottles and jars filled with shells on the windowsill in my reading room…might have to move them to the tv console so that I can enjoy them more!
