Oh yes, people. You’ve been waiting for it, and here it is: another National Food Holiday. If you read this blog regularly, you’ll know that I have a thing for these random food holidays. I’ve talked about them here, here, here, here and here.
Today’s just makes me laugh. Happy National Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day!
Whaaa??
I mean, why shouldn’t dogs get a day too? But dog biscuit appreciation day? Why not just National Dog Biscuit Day? Do we really appreciate them so much?
Well, now that I think about it, this guy appreciates them.
Although Fletcher appreciates pretty much every type of food out there. So I decided to make him some homemade beef, bacon and peanut butter dog treats to show him some love.
Dog biscuits are actually really fun to make. And they are absolutely perfect for kids and beginning bakers. Because here’s the thing: is it really that big of a deal if your kids’ hands aren’t perfectly clean, or if you overbake them a little bit? One of Fletcher’s favorite treats is dirty tissues that he fishes out of the trash. He also eats mulch. I can tell you, he’s not going to care if Mason licked his fingers and then touched the dough.
These dog treats have all sorts of yummy treats in them: bacon grease, beef broth, bacon, peanut butter, oatmeal… I think Dave was actually eyeing them up for himself.
Just mix everything up in a big ol’ bowl, roll out the dough, cut them out with cookie cutters {we used little hearts and flowers — although it’s been so effin’ cold here lately, Mason kept calling the flowers “snowflakes”. I think we need to move.}, and bake them.
We used 1.5″ cookie cutters and got well over 100 little treats, so this recipe makes enough to last a nice long while!
Beef, Bacon & Peanut Butter Dog Treats
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup bacon grease room temperature
- 1 egg
- 1/2 c water
- 1 T beef broth concentrate {see notes}
- 1/2 cup smooth peanut butter
- 2 c whole wheat flour
- 4 slices bacon cooked, cooled & crumbled
- 1/4 c old fashioned oats
Instructions
- 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- 2. In a stand mixer or electric mixer, mix together bacon grease, egg, water, beef broth concentrate and peanut butter until smooth. Add in whole wheat flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until fully combined. Add in bacon and oats and mix until combined.
- 3. If necessary, knead dough together to get everything fully mixed in. On a lightly floured surface, roll half of the dough out to approximately 1/4" thick. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters and place 1/2" apart on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Knead scraps back together and repeat. Repeat with second half of dough.
- 4. Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until hard and crunchy. Cool completely before feeding to your dog.

Thanks, Stephanie! My 3-year-old loved helping to make these, and he gets so excited when he gets to give Fletcher one of “our” treats!!

I’ll be making some of these for the dogs in my and my sisters’ families for Christmas. I like that they’re kid friendly, too. I can probably get some of the grandkids to help me or they can take the recipe home to make for their animals. Do you think cats would be able to eat these, too? Cats like treats, too!
Thanks!
